Overview
Ida is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in central Monroe County. Most of it lies in Ida Township, and a smaller part extends north into Raisinville Township. The area began as a stagecoach stop between Monroe and Adrian, where the Wayside Inn opened in 1825 for travelers on rough early roads. The Michigan Southern Railroad arrived by 1839, a post office opened in 1844, and the community was platted in 1868. Its depot, later part of the New York Central, closed in 1959, and the rail line has since been removed. Ida is centered on Lewis Avenue, where the township hall, the Ida Branch Library and the volunteer fire department share 3016 Lewis Avenue. St. Joseph Church, built in 1904, is a local landmark, and Ida Public Schools operates from a single campus.
