Overview
Ottawa Lake is an unincorporated community in Whiteford Township, in the southwest corner of Monroe County near the Lenawee County line. It grew up around 1846 along the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad, the first railway in the Michigan Territory, and its post office opened that same year. The station and tracks are long gone. Railway Road now follows the old rail path, and a Monroe County Historical Society marker recalls the railroad. The community centers on Brown Street and Memorial Highway (formerly Old US 223), about 3 miles west of US 23. The post office is at 8425 Brown Street, with the volunteer fire station across the street. The 49267 ZIP Code covers most of Whiteford Township, which was organized in 1834 and remains largely agricultural, and Whiteford Agricultural Schools has its campus on Consear Road.
